Exciting times at Literature Society. Not only do we have a new committee, but we are hosting the Scottish National Poetry Slam Championships!!! The slam winners from across Scotland will pitch word against word in the Pleasance Cabaret bar on the 28th of March. At the end of the night we shall have our CHAMPION. Annual General Meeting

On Thursday we shall meet at Room 7.18 in David Hume Tower, and go to the pub to celebrate afterwards.

The Edinburgh University Literature Society will convene its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 7 March, 2013. During this meeting, we shall be electing the society’s Committee for 2013-4. All members are invited to participate in the Annual General Meeting, either to stand for election for any of the posts or by casting their vote in electing the new committee. Interested members are also invited to run for any of the Committee positions open. All matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh are eligible to hold Committee positions.

Being in the Lit Soc team is a lot of fun and you will get to be involved with the organisation of all events regardless of your position. You will develop very handy skills such as teamwork, event organisation, advertising and communications.

The committee positions are as follows, including the names of the incumbents in brackets. Feel free to contact any one of the Committee and ask about the post if you are interested in running.

To stand the election, you only need to nominate yourself during the AGM, either in person or through a proxy. You will be required to present a short speech on why you feel you are a suitable candidate for the post.

SLAM

We trust everybody had a blast at our last Poetry Workshop and Open Mic. Now, it’s time to get down to business: for poets to clash on stage for better and for verse. Watch as poets go head to head for the chance to compete in the Scottish National Slam Championship. We’ve always had a cracking good time, and this time is going to be no different with lots of new voices, and no doubt lots of seasoned veterans.

This slam will be compered by Jenny Lindsay, poet and co-host of the wonderful poetry night Rally & Broad.

Doors open 7.30pm, event starts at 8pm.

Join us for masked revels in the palatial surroundings of Ghillie Dhu, we shall dine on hearty Scotch broth with crisp croutons, pan seared salmon fillet with creamed leeks, tomato and garlic coulis or wild mushroom risotto with minted peas and dressed rocket and vanilla cheesecake with berry compote. A Taste of Honey

We’re planning a trip to see Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey on this Thursday (31st). The original kitchen sink drama caused a stir when first produced in 1958 for it’s taboo subjects of teenage pregnancy and inter-racial couples. On Thursday we’re all going to the filmhouse to see Les Mis under the tenuous literary connection of celebrating Victor Hugo. Apparently if makes you cry with hope and dreams of a new dawn and the power of love, or leaves you dead inside and doubting the revolution will ever truly come. Poetry Slam!

After the massive success of our first Poetry Slam last month, we’re back with a second installment of performance poets going head to head in the Cabaret Bar once again!

Come along to the Cabaret Bar to witness more poets, some new, some seasoned and a handful even groomed at our Workshop, compete once again for a prize slot in the Scottish National Slam Championship and for the sheer passion and love for performance poetry.

Tuesday 15th May ~ 7:30pm ~ Pleasance Cabaret Bar

We’re delighted to host Alexander Macleod’s first reading in Edinburgh in conjunction with Ullapool Book Festival.

Alexander MacLeod was born in Inverness, Cape Breton and raised in Windsor, Ontario. Published in Canada in 2010, Light Lifting is his first collection of short stories and was shortlisted for the Giller Prize, the Commonwealth Prize, two Atlantic Book Awards, and went on to become a national bestseller. Alexander holds degrees from the University of Windsor, the University of Notre Dame, and McGill; he currently lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and teaches at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax.

Poetry Slam

Tuesday 20th March - 7PM - Cabaret Bar, Pleasance

It’s difficult to believe that the final poetry slam of the academic year is upon us!

As always, there will be wonderful poetry in a relaxed atmosphere. The prize for the winner is the usual bottle of cheap booze and (far more exciting) a place at the Scottish Poetry Slam Championships! Along with this year’s previous winners, this slam’s champ will be performing at the 2012 Scottish Poetry Slam Championship on March 9th in Glasgow.

Last year the Literature Society was able to raise £150 for Book Aid International, supporting literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This year we would like to raise even more, and you can help us by attending our Cocktails Evening.

Featuring a full menu of literary cocktails, replete with either brilliant or terrible names, depending upon your taste in puns. You can even dress up if you like.
